Crowdsourced Data for Mobile Network Measurements

Crowdsourced Data for Mobile Network Measurements

Benefits of employing crowdsourced measurements for evaluating the performance of mobile networks

Crowdsourcing is a settled concept in scientific analyses. It enables new engineering rules and applications. It has various use cases in mobile network performance measurement and several companies offer data crowdsourcing as a service in the market. In contrast to measurements provided by operational support systems (OSS), measurements obtained through crowdsourcing are characterized by a greater emphasis on the user. This approach enables a direct assessment of the quality of experience (QoE) for end users and offers a greater number of samples compared to drive tests. However, the utilization of crowdsourced data performance measurements has the potential to lead to inaccurate conclusions if the associated challenges and limitations are not fully comprehended by the management teams of mobile network operators.

In this paper, authored by Hasan Gün, we discuss the advantages of a crowdsourced mobile network performance measurement method as well as the challenges and drawbacks of crowdsourcing to obtain a balanced view from different perspectives.
