P.I. Works’ field proven energy saving solution powered by P.I. Works uSON (the award-winning automated network management platform) and expert engineers help operators reduce their energy costs and dependency on additional network equipment through more efficient use of the existing network resources for 2G, 3G, 4G and beyond. uSON uses cognitive algorithms to identify the traffic patterns and take predictive actions to reduce the energy consumption while ensuring the network quality.
Energy saving actions shut down unutilized carriers with traffic lower than a threshold in a given time frame. When a cell/carrier is shut down, a neighboring cell or a group of cells overtake the traffic of the original cell. Carriers are powered back on by the increase of utilization in the active carriers which usually depends on time of the day. Operator traffic management policies can easily be adapted to the energy saving module.
A prominent Tier 1 European Mobile Operator recently implemented P.I. Works uSON in a specific geography where 3 carriers x 2 sectors exist for 3G in a one month project. The project produced immediate results and savings that will continue to accrue as the project progresses. The estimated cost savings that can be achieved in a nationwide rollout is approximately $8.5 million per annum, which is a significant amount for the operator and the savings might increase as per the diversity of the radio technologies optimized. No coverage degradation has been observed during the project and the subscriber experience has been ensured.

- No Coverage Impact: State-of-the-art cell footprint management mechanism minimizes coverage mismatches between the colocated cells by locking/unlocking carriers on pre-configured order.
- Green Network Operation: Managing energy consumption will be a challenging task with the increasing number of base stations especially together with small cell rollout, which might lead to increased OpEx.
